Wikipedia Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License

Post by DJExxx »

I just got a message pop up saying I can not post urls so i have clicked the back button and will try again changing the web address a bit....

Hi,
Thank you in advance for any help I receive.

I have used some text from wikipedia on Tabernacles and I just want to check that I have understood the license, atribution and use policy.

This is the page - markmunson.co.uk/Tabernacles.php I have put " " around the text that I have used and put the attribution and link to the license at the end of the text I have used. It seems to make sense to me (the way I have done it), but I don't want my client to get into any trouble for using copyright material.

Many Thanks,
Dan

Hi Dan,
I think you have everything buttoned up OK. There should be no problems with what you have quoted. Obviously as you haven't changed anything within the quote, the Share Alike part of the licence doesn't apply here.
However you may want to change the spelling of the word 'information'.

changed text?

Hi Andy,

Thanks for your reply.

Do you mean, if I do not change any of the text that I am using I just need to attribute it i.e "From Wikipedia" but if I change the text I need to include information about the Share License? I have changed some of the text that I have used.

Thanks,

Dan

The Share-Alike tag is designed to cover the circumstances when someone changes a Creative Commons work. To take a parallel example of a fully copyright work - say an image - which I give you permission to alter or adapt extensively so that a new, derivative work is created. You would own the copyright in that new image and could determine how it was exploited.
With a Creative Commons work, you are automatically allowed to use and alter a protected work without seeking permission, but if the Share Alike tag is added, the first author is asking you to also release your derived work under the same terms as him, ie a CC Share-Alike licence.
I didn't notice that you had altered the text that you quoted, so for the sake of clarity I would suggest that you keep your existing attribution which refers to the Share Alike licence.
