I recquested permissions to use images in my thesis. The licences I received came with the terms and conditions pasted below.

I am not sure if I understand, so I would kindly ask you to let me know if this licence allows me to use the image in my thesis which will be freely available online to the geneal public.

Hi arctic,

It depends how you intend to make your thesis freely available online. If it is on your own website, then that is allowed. However you should not post your thesis (or at least that part of it which contains the Springer-owned material) on any other website, portal or archive except your university's own repository, without getting further permission. You may not publish the thesis on paper beyond the number of copies needed by your university. And obviously you must comply with the copyright acknowledgement requirements.

Although the terms don't specifically forbid it, I would suggest you don't use a format such as pdf to provide the thesis on your own website, as this suggests that the thesis is being made available for easy download. Although having the text in a format such as Word .doc or .docx would be relatively easy for someone to copy and paste it, at least that would require two deliberate steps by a third party, whereas if they can only access the thesis in pdf, they are forced to download the document before being able to read it, so this would facilitate thoughtless copying.

I think this has got to be the last time we do this. As you acknowledge, reproducing great chunks of terms and conditions really isn't what the forums are for.

It would appear that all three sets of terms allow you to use the image in your thesis on your website, but in the case of the Wiley materials (terms # 1) more detail may be given in the actual licence. And with the Elsevier terms (terms # 2 and 3) there is the additional requirement that any storage in a University archive etc is only permitted if access to the archive is limited to bona fide students and researchers. Since I assume you only wish to use an image or images, the translation requirements in the Elsevier terms won't apply in your case.

All three sets of terms stipulate that if you contemplate publishing your thesis commercially, you will need to apply for a separate licence and then probably expect to pay a fee for this.
