Royalties: PPL/PRS

Can anyone help me sort out the pros and cons of joining PPL and PRS?
I am unsure if I should register or not.
I DO want to receive royalties but I DO NOT want my registration to deter venue owners from booking me (I have heard that small venues do not like to book registered PRS bands because it means they would be liable to pay heavy royalties).
Any advice is appreciated, especially if anyone has had experience with these associations.
