Logo Design

Post by Miss Jones »

Hi

I am having a logo designed for my website and I asked about the copyright and was told that it remains with the artist but I am allowed to use it for whatever I like for my business.

If someone is offering a logo service is this usual and can I insist on having it assigned to me?

Thanks!

Hi Miss Jones and welcome to the forum.

Someone designing a logo can retain the copyright to the logo and simply license it to you as you state.

It is common for a designer to retain copyright until they have been paid in full - and the can even (as you indicate in this case) retain the rights and license the work. Copyright is their property and they can choose whether to sell it.

If they refuse to sell, I would look at the license/contract closely to ensure there are no hidden surprises in store for the future.

Thank you for your advice. The agreement seems to cover everything I need.
