Re: Country to country variation

AndyJ wrote: Wed Nov 18, 2020 10:51 pm Hi darinfan,

Yes, the country of origin in that case would be the USA and so the only law you need to worry about is US law; as it's out of copyright there, it's out of copyright everywhere.
You're a star. Thank you for all your help.

Re: Country to country variation

Hi darinfan,

You have every right to be confused. The way in which the USA calculated its copyright term didn't change until the 1976 Copyright Act so it will be some time yet before things become simpler to sort out. The USA has always played by its own idiosyncratic rules when it comes to ...

Country to country variation

I am never quite sure about how the copyright law of one country affects another, so I was wondering if I could give some examples and see how they play out.

Let's say a film was made and copyrighted in Hollywood in 1925. This will be coming out of copyright in America on January 21st 2021. That ...

Thank you :) I'm so glad you put it in plain English at the end, as I was getting confused with the jargon :)

International Copyright Law

I have found the following information on the Wikipedia entry for Copyright Law of the United Kingdom:

Where the author is not British (by nationality or domicile), and the work was first published outside the United Kingdom (and not published in the UK within 30 days thereafter), the period of ...

Publicity Photos

Would a publicity photo (headshot) of a star taken in, say, 1960 be in copyright? I have read elsewhere that most publicity photos prior to 1964 would be in the public domain, but I just want to check this out to make sure. It would make sense, as they were to be used for publicising the star in the ...

Thanks. That helps a great deal. Nearly all the magazines are American, and with no UK equivalent edition, so that really helps to clarify things. Thank you.

Thank you for your reply, which is much appreciated. My book would indeed be a commentary on the products that the adverts were advertising (the film or the LP etc). Do you know how this might be affected if the magazine that the advert is taken from is now out of copyright? For example, an advert ...

Copyright on Promotional Materials

Hi

I was wondering if anyone can comment on the copyright of promotional materials - I'm talking about things like an advert in a magazine for a record or a film, for example. The period would be 1950s to 1970s. I've always assumed that promotional materials such as these, film posters, etc were ...

Magazine copyright query (an easy one, I hope!)

Hi. Great and useful site. I just want to run something by you folks so you can verify that I am correct in my assumption.

I live in the UK, and have a collection of American magazines from the late 1920s. I have got verification that the copyright was not renewed on them and they are now in the ...
