I agree with the above - don't mix up copyright and registration. I lot of people seem to struggle with this. Copyright IS automatic. You have it already. There is no such thing as 'copyrighting my work' copyright is a noun not a verb (no matter what the Americans tell you ;) )

Oh I see - so you are basically selling copies of public domain work. Well there are certainly enough publishers doing that, so I can't image you would run into many problems, though I can't imagine you could make much money at it either.

Even IF the forum member does 'sign over copyright' (!?!) on posting - if they posted it on your forum before they posted on his, that would precede any transfer of copyright and there is nothing he could do about that anyway.

You state 'my illustrations won't look remotely like the photos' - so you could take the view 'who will know' (ahem! I'm not telling you to do that ).

When you write your copyright notice you could just write something like
'Permission granted to reproduce for personal and educational use only. Commercial copying, hiring, lending is prohibited.'

Aspects such as 'free for non-commercial use' refer to how you licence your work.

There is no need to get a lawyer for this, I would simply go to http://creativecommons.org/license/ and use their online licence generator to create on for you.
