Contributions requested for copyright information site

I have recently started a copyright and IP information site that aims to provide basic information on IP matters in many languages and taking an more international view.

It is still very much a 'work in progress' at the moment, but is slowly evolving. If anyone is interested, the site can be found ...

Computer generated logos

I have seen a few online sites that offer to design a logo for free (with an option to buy a high-res version). These seem to be entirely computer generated, i.e. you put in a name and topic and a list of logo options in different fonts and colours and images are immediately generated.

The logo is ...

Cheers Andy for such a quick and informative reply.

Can I just ask one (probably stupid) question - picking up on the statement "This may require the sender to appear in a distant court, at their own expense" on the Wikipedia link.

Say I send a cease and desist anyway and they did apply for a ...

Declaratory judgements - how to avoid?

Hope someone can help me on this one as I am getting a bit worried.

I want to take action against an someone reusing my work without permission (not an exact copy, but IMO clearly based on my work).

My understanding was that the first step in such cases (and what I have done in similar situations ...

I agree with the above - don't mix up copyright and registration. I lot of people seem to struggle with this. Copyright IS automatic. You have it already. There is no such thing as 'copyrighting my work' copyright is a noun not a verb (no matter what the Americans tell you ;) )

Registration is all ...

Hi helenmary

My humble opinion is that I completely agree with you :)

"Surely no one should have recorded the choir without telling/asking the choir members and condutor first?"
- My understanding is that performers must give permission for a performance to be recorded. What you have here is a ...

Oh I see - so you are basically selling copies of public domain work. Well there are certainly enough publishers doing that, so I can't image you would run into many problems, though I can't imagine you could make much money at it either.

:?: :!: Do I understand this correctly - all you are doing is copying other peoples work and hoping to make money from it?

I must be missing the point?? - What are you actually selling on your 'sales page'?

Hi John

Just a thought:

Even IF the forum member does 'sign over copyright' (!?!) on posting - if they posted it on your forum before they posted on his, that would precede any transfer of copyright and there is nothing he could do about that anyway.

(BTW  what forum are we referring ...

You state 'my illustrations won't look remotely like the photos' - so you could take the view 'who will know' (ahem! I'm not telling you to do that ;) ).

When you write your copyright notice you could just write something like
'Permission granted to reproduce for personal and educational use only. Commercial copying, hiring, lending is prohibited.'
(I nabbed this from http://www.copyrightservice.co.uk/copyright/p03_copyright_notices which is a handy ...

Aspects such as 'free for non-commercial use' refer to how you licence your work.

There is no need to get a lawyer for this, I would simply go to http://creativecommons.org/license/ and use their online licence generator to create on for you.
